Where It All Began

“So, where did the name come from?” — it’s one of the most common questions we get in the salon!

Many people assume Little Herberts was named after one of my sons (and yes, one of them is called Herbert). But truth be told, that’s just a happy coincidence.

The real story goes back a few generations — and a few thousand miles — to London’s East End.

A Name Full of Character

The phrase “Scruffy Little ‘Erberts” is an old English expression that originated in Victorian London. Think Oliver Twistand his mischievous street urchin friends — that’s where the saying began. Over time, it became a cheeky term of endearment used by parents and grandparents all over the UK.

For me, it’s deeply personal. My family are East Enders, and I grew up hearing my grandad, Dickie, call us “little ‘erberts” whenever we came home with grass-stained knees, messy hair, and big smiles after a day of play. My dad carried on the tradition with his grandkids — and I hope one day (in no rush!) to use it with my own.

Those words always came with affection and laughter, and they perfectly capture what childhood should be: free, fun, and full of character.

Bringing the Name to Life

When it came time to name this business, there really wasn’t another option. Little Herberts just felt right — it embodies everything we love about kids and what we do every day in the salon.

We see little ones come in with hair in their eyes, curls gone wild, or knots that could rival fairy lights at Christmas. By the time they leave, they’re fresh, confident, and grinning from ear to ear — walking out a million dollars.

In as scruffy little herberts, out as dapper Jacks and Jills. And honestly, it never stops making me smile.

The same philosophy runs through our Little Herberts product range. Every shampoo, conditioner, detangling brush, wax, gel, and spray is designed specifically for kids — gentle, effective, and free from harsh chemicals.

Because we believe in keeping things simple, safe, and kind — to their hair, their skin, and the planet.
